Amy Lloyd ’06 from Orem, Utah is responsible for bringing a unique form of awareness to the UVSC campus. While taking Ron Hammond’s applied sociology class last spring, Lloyd came up with the idea to create a 12-step pornography addiction program in student health services at UVSC. With the help of other dedicated individuals, Lloyd was able to turn her idea into a reality.

“Pornography addiction is a growing problem in today’s society and it is an issue that I would like to see addressed more openly,” Lloyd said. “I want people to be comfortable enough to discuss these issues and to seek help, instead of pretending like the problem doesn’t exist.”

Shortly after implementation of the 12-step program, Lloyd developed an independent study class to promote awareness of pornography addiction. Through the class, Lloyd and a group of behavioral science students created a pornography addiction awareness seminar. It featured Rory Reid, Utah’s foremost expert on the subject of sexual addictions, and a panel of professionals from the field. Being the first seminar of its kind on UVSC’s campus, it received statewide attention and was attended by more than 250 individuals.

"The seminar turned out to be a great event,” she said. “I was surprised by the attention it received.”

Lloyd and fellow students were also selected to present their project at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (RMPA) conference in Park City, Utah. The RMPA research conference brought professionals, educators and students from all over the west to present original research in the field of psychology.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in behavioral science this spring, Lloyd plans to continue her education with a master’s degree in social work with an emphasis in sexual addictions. She hopes to continue her research and activism in this particular field of harmful addiction. Lloyd is grateful for the time that she has spent at UVSC and recognizes the role UVSC has played in her success.

"UVSC has really supportive faculty that have encouraged me to succeed in life.” Lloyd said. “They always go above and beyond to help me further my education and career.”

UVSC Student Health Services plans to continue with the pornography addiction support group, and with the help of the behavioral science department, plans to continue holding awareness seminars.
