Jacques Baraketse

Jacques Baraketse

Originally from the small mining city of Katanga, located at the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, Jacques Baraketse is a man with a remarkable history.

In 1994, Barakese witnessed one of the cruelest wars in the history of the world, while visiting family during the time of the infamous Rwandan Genocide.  Finding refuge in the Hotel Des Mille Collines (as portrayed in the movie “Hotel Rwanda”), Baraketse now stands as one of the 1,268 survivors who found shelter at the hotel but lost many members of his family.

"That experience had a big impact on my life,” Baraketse said.  “It is why I want to work so hard to build peace wherever I go.”

Because of the danger that existed in Africa at that time, he relocated to Belgium where he and others founded the Center of Studies and Documentation for Central Africa.  The goal was to increase knowledge and awareness about the movement of refugees by organizing debates, conferences and maintaining archives.  While in Belgium, Baraketse also created an organization called “Idea and Concept,” which he formed based on the idea of using technology to aid impoverished areas.

"Poor rural areas are in need of jobs, technology and education,” he said.  “They need new ideas and creative solutions to develop.”

Baraketse then earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology in Brussels, Belgium.  In 2004, Baraketse and his wife, Yvonne, moved to New Oleans for further opportunities in education and to strengthen their language skills.

In the fall of 2005, tragedy struck once again for Baraketse.  Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest hurricanes to strike the U.S., hit the city of New Orleans with full force.  The small family was forced to evacuate and relocated several times before moving to Utah on September 14, 2005.

"We lost everything,” said Baraketse.  “With the help of UVSC, my family has been able to find peace here in Utah.”

Baraketse chose UVSC because the institution was able to offer him just what he wanted - a chance to study what he loves - technology.  He plans to start classes at UVSC this fall, working towards a bachelor degree in Technology Management.  With the help of individual donors and a private scholarship, UVSC was the perfect fit for Baraketse.

"I have felt really welcomed at UVSC.” Baraketse said.  “I am very excited to be here and to start my program."
