Event: Identity Showcases UVU Student Art

Utah Valley University’s graduating class of thirty visual arts students is showcasing its best artwork to the public in a show titled Event:Identity. The opening reception of the show is Nov. 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Library. The art will be on display until Dec. 1.

"Event:Identity is a chance for the students to celebrate their education at UVU and to share that celebration with the public," said Alex Bigney, UVU visual arts adjunct professor. The event will showcase a variety of mediums: photography, charcoal, pottery, sculpture, graphic design and more.

Under the supervision of Bigney, this is the first time students in the senior seminar class created and produced the entire event. "All the students have been working really hard to make pieces that represent who we are individually and where we have come from," said Amber Lindsay, a UVU senior majoring in graphic design. "The art department has grown so much in just the last couple years. I think everyone is excited to show the community that UVU has quality programs to offer art students."

Students chose to name the show Event:Identity to illustrate the personal identity and individuality of each artist represented at the event. "Some of the students represented are fine artists ready for graduate school or hoping to freelance. Some of the graphic artists already have positions with Fortune 500 companies awaiting them," Bigney said. "Others are still exploring their possible futures. Part of the challenge of graduating as a visual artist is the individual nature of the path ahead."

The UVU Department of Art & Visual Communications commits to preparing its students for the professional world. "Personally, I am very impressed with the caliber of young visual artists graduating from ‘the other university’ in Utah Valley," Bigney said. "In fact, I think there is perhaps a broader spectrum of artists graduating from Utah Valley University than from comparably sized universities elsewhere."

High school students are especially encouraged to come to the art show and explore the higher education opportunities available in the Department of Art & Visual Communications.
