UVSC’s Student Alumni Association recently changed its name to the Student Alumni Board-a name which better reflects the status of the group as a sub-board of UVSC’s Alumni Board and fits more closely with national trends.
“This was not an overnight process,” said Jay Fugal, president of the Student Alumni Board. The idea for the name change was prompted by interaction with similar groups from other universities, many of which had the name “Alumni Board” instead of “Alumni Association.” After discussing and debating the proposed name with the Student Alumni Association Council over a period of several weeks, it was then put to a vote and passed.
The name change coincides closely with the transition from UVSC to UVU. “The decision was made that if we were going to change our name and our image, it should be done now, when the school as a whole is changing,” said Fugal.
The purpose of the Student Alumni Board is to work with UVSC students to help them gain an appreciation for their school. This includes activities such as the recent “Giving of the Green” campaign, which enabled students who donated $50 to UVSC’s new library to have their name included on a plaque that will be displayed on campus. The Student Alumni Board also celebrates UVSC Founder’s Day, which is the College’s birthday, with cake and ice cream in the hallways of the school.
“We want to create a life-long relationship between students and UVSC,” said Fugal. “Our mission is to create a bond between the students, the school and its alumni.”
