UVSC Holds 21st Annual Environmental Ethics Conference

Did you know that Salt Lake City, Provo and Logan consistently rank in the top 10 U.S. cities for worst acute spikes in air pollution? Environmental issues and the health concerns that come with them are problems that are not going away. UVSC’s 21st Annual Environmental Ethics Conference will address these, and other environmental topics, April 1 and 2. Speakers include Dr. Brian Moench, president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, and Chip Ward, author and environmental activist. In addition to lectures, the conference will include an awards presentation of the Environmental Stewardship Award to Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. Cheryl Heying, director of Air Quality for the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, will accept the award on his behalf.

The conference will be focused around the theme, “Public Health and the Environment.” As Utah-and the world-continues to increase in population, issues with air and water pollution, respiratory health and cancer-causing environmental toxins are expected to become even greater problems, said David Keller, director for UVSC’s Center for the Study of Ethics. “Public health and the environment affect everyone,” Keller said. “As citizens in a democracy, we all have a responsibility to become informed and develop opinions on the correct public policies we should have regarding these issues.”

The event is sponsored by UVSC’s Center for the Study of Ethics, and is one of the longest-standing annual conferences at the institution. It is free and open to all members of the community.
