UVSC's Repertory Ballet Ensemble to Hold First Performance

UVSC’s Department of Dance will present their first Repertory Ballet Ensemble (RBE) concert, Repertory Ballet Ensemble Premier, April 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. The Ensemble is a new ballet performing company made up of student performers.

Students must audition each semester to be part of UVSC’s ballet program, designed to prepare students for a professional career in ballet. The ensemble currently showcases 12 students.

“We had a studio showing in November and I think we surprised a lot of people with the level of student talent,” said Nichole Ortega, RBE artistic director and assistant professor in the Department of Dance. “The level of choreography for this concert is extremely difficult physically and emotionally, but they are definitely up to the challenge. The students are pioneers of this company and I am so proud of all they have accomplished.”

All the pieces to be performed are choreographed by dance faculty or guest choreographers. Shayla Bott, a dance faculty member, choreographed a piece titled “Disposition,” which consists of three solos and will be performed to live piano music. Another piece titled “Carioca,” choreographed by Ortega, is a number that expresses the beauty of all women.

“Audience members will be able to experience all types of choreography from very contemporary to very classical,” said Ortega. “There is definitely something for everyone.”

Tickets are on sale at Campus Connection at (801) 863-8797. The cost is $10 for students and $12 for general admission.
