Julián Cardona Speaks As Part of Real World Lecture Series

Julián Cardona, a photojournalist from Juárez, Mexico, is coming to UVSC February 23 to speak as part of The Real World Lecture Series, sponsored by UVSC’s Department of Communication. The lecture will be held in the Ragan Theater and is co-sponsored by the Department of English and Literature, the Department of Integrated Studies, the Center for the Study of Ethics and the Peace and Justice Studies Program. It will begin at 1 p.m.

Cardona has spent more than a decade documenting the social upheaval in Mexico’s border, photographing scenes of violence and poverty. He’s also documented the wide-spread immigration of Mexicans to the United States and provided photographs for the book “Exodus,” a project for which he worked closely with award-winning author and journalist Charles Bowden. Cardona will show some of the photos used in “Exodus” and discuss them before giving the audience a chance to ask him questions regarding his work and the situation in his home country.

“It will be the truth,” said Scott Carrier, assistant instructor in UVSC’s Department of Communication. “There will be no beating around the bush on Cardona’s part, no staying quiet, no holding back to protect someone. He will speak on the stark reality of what’s actually happening.”

Cordona’s lecture is the first in the Department of Communication’s The Real World Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.
