Marc Becker to Give Students an Insight to Latin America

Marc Becker from Truman State University will visit UVSC Feb. 25 at 7p.m. in LA 101. His speech is titled “From Oppressed nationalities to an Ethno-Nationalist Discourse in Ecuadorian Indigenous Movements.”

Latin American Studies is Becker’s broad historical focus but his research interests lie primarily in modern Andean indigenous movements. By coming to the lecture, students will gain insight into a particular historical topic and how that historian approaches that topic as well as their interpretation within the broader context of history.

“The more students learn about history, the more connections they can see in their own lives and the importance of history in how they live their lives,” said Lyn Bennett, assistant professor of history and political science. “The Turning Points in History Lecture series provide students opportunities to learn about events they might not otherwise have.”

Becker has written numerous books regarding his studies about race, class and reform movements in Latin America. The event is free and open to the public.
