Jeffrey Nichols Speaks in Turning Points in History Lecture Series

Jeffrey Nichols, author and associate professor of History at Westminster College, will come to UVSC January 28 to speak as part of the UVSC Department of History’s Turning Points in History Lecture Series. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in room 101 of the Liberal Arts building on UVSC’s Orem Campus.

The lecture, "Reality and Imagination: One Woman's Wild West," will focus upon the memoirs of Ann Gordge Lee, the last wife of LDS pioneer John D. Lee. “The memoir raises what are, I think, some intriguing questions,” says Nichols. “What is the relationship between history, folklore, myth and legend? What accounts for the enduring popularity of western stories, and why are they so often violent?”

Nichols’ research includes various topics of the Western United States, including African-Americans, Mormonism and wilderness. He is the author of “Prostitution, Polygamy and Power: Salt Lake City, 1847-1918,” which was published in 2002.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
