In a Spring 2006 survey, the American College Health Association (ACHA) asked college students about health-related issues, including questions related to eating disorders. In that survey, 47.5 percent of women and 25.1 percent of men answered they had behaviors related to eating disorders.
In Spring 2007, UVSC conducted a similar survey to students, and 61.5 percent of women and 33.7 percent of men responded that they have behaviors that can be associated with eating disorders. Because eating disorders are such a concern at UVSC, the Student Health Services Wellness Program hosts an Eating Disorder Workshop each semester. This semester’s workshop titled, “Love Your Body,” will be held February 13 in rooms 206 a and b in the Sorensen Student Center at UVSC’s Orem Campus. The workshop begins at 12 p.m. and will feature Nicole Hawkins from the Center for Change eating disorder clinic in Orem.
Hawkins received her Ph.D. from Utah State University in 1999 and specializes in the topics of body image in the media, the diet industry, plastic surgery, childhood issues and learning to appreciate one's body. The workshop will address these issues, as well as draw attention to disordered eating patterns. It is geared toward not only those dealing with eating disorders, but also those who have a friend or loved one with an eating disorder.
“Eating disorders are such an important issue on our campus,” said Amy Grubbs, director of student health services and wellness programs. “The more people who are aware and educated on the subject, the better we will be able to help each other. Many times we know people with problems, but don’t know what to do or how to help them. It’s important for people to get involved in workshops like these so that we can address the problem.”
The workshop is free and open to all students and faculty, as well as the general public.
