UVSC Faculty Presents at National Geological Society of America

Utah Valley State College’s Bill Dinklage, assistant professor of earth science, will present his research as part of the 119th annual meeting of the Geological Society of American held Oct. 27-31 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver where approximately 6,300 geoscientists are expected to attend.

“I’m looking forward to getting in some discussion with others who will be there,” said Dinklage. “That’s what these conferences are all about. We get together, talk, share ideas and get some feedback from each other. There are some things I don’t fully understand and I’ll hopefully meet some people there who can shed some light on that.”

Dinklage’s research took him and two UVSC students to Nev. where they investigated the thermal structure of a mountain belt by measuring metamorphic temperatures with the titanium-in-biotite geothermometer.

“It’s a fairly new technique, so there are some people who are working on using it and some who have used it with some success,” Dinklage said. “Our results are not perfect, which is actually good because it will help us figure out why there is scatter in our results.”

The two students working with Dinklage were Thane St. Clair from American Fork, Utah majoring in earth science education and John Calder from Sandy, Utah working on a degree in integrated studies with emphases in earth science and philosophy.
