UVSC Hosting High School Dance Workshop

The halls of the Liberal Arts Building at Utah Valley State College will be buzzing with youthful energy as loads of high school students fill the dance studios Nov. 10 for the Dance Department’s Annual High School Dance Workshop. Students from approximately 100 high schools in the region have been invited to participate in a day-long workshop designed to introduce them to the degrees and career options in dance at UVSC.

“The workshop will be beneficial to those contemplating a future in dance,” said Anglea Banchero-Kelleher, assistant professor of dance at UVSC.  “It will give students an experience that will communicate to them the great excitement we have for our department and the firm conviction we have that our department is going to be the place for students to continue their dance education and build their foundation.”

During the workshop, students will take two dance classes, meet the faculty and participate in a discussion about the dance programs with Department Chair Kim Strunk and Modern Dance Advisor Doris Trujillo. Later in the day, students will watch an informal performance by four of UVSC’s dance groups.

“The students can ask questions about the department from the faculty at any time,” said Banchero-Kelleher. “But after the concert, they will have the opportunity to talk to the performers and find out what dancing at UVSC is really like.”

The high school workshop will also help promote awareness of four new bachelor degrees in dance; BFA in Dance, Modern emphasis, BFA in Dance, Ballet emphasis, BS in Dance Education and BS in Movement Studies, Ballroom emphasis. The recent approval and implementation of these bachelor degrees represents a firm commitment to the community to continue the tradition of dance excellence in Utah.
