UVSC Opens Expanded Honors Program with Guest of Honor
Dr. Geoff Tabin, co-director of the Himalayan Cataract Project, will speak at Utah Valley State College Tuesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. in the Losee Center, room 243, to inaugurate the new study area for honors students named, the Study Commons in LC 203, and officially open the expanded Honors Program at UVSC, which will offer honors students more scholarships, choices in classes, activities, opportunities for undergraduate research and service.
Tabin, a professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Utah and the John A. Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City, was the fourth person to climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest points of all seven continents, including the east face of Mount Everest. Tabin also authored “Blind Corners – Adventures on Everest and the World’s Tallest Peak.”
“Dr. Tabin exemplifies honors in his excellent achievements, his extensive education and his interest in taking his gifts to the wider world,” said Joy Ross, director of UVSC’s honors program.
Tabin, a graduate of Yale College, Oxford University and Harvard Medical School, completed a general surgery internship at the University of Colorado hospitals before completing his residency in ophthalmology at Brown University and a corneal fellowship at Melbourne University in Australia before spending a year teaching eye surgery in Nepal. In 1994 he co-founded the Himalayan Cataract Project, an effort to eliminate preventable and treatable blindness in the Himalayas through quality ophthalmic care, education and establishment of a world-class eye care infrastructure.
A light buffet and open house with tours of the new honors study area and administrative offices will be held preceding the presentation at 6:30 p.m.
