UVSC to host Native American Conference, Pow-wow and Buffalo Dinner

UVSC Multicultural Center, Native American Council and the UVSC Native Sun Club will host the annual Native American Conference, Pow-wow and Buffalo dinner scholarship fundraiser November 3 and 4. This year is also the first annual Buffalo Dinner fundraiser; a cultural feast with different multi-cultural entertainment November 3 at 7 p.m. in the Sorensen Student Center, room 206.

The Native American Conference will begin November 3 at 9 a.m. with multiple workshops including Hoopdance, Bead work, Native learning style and flute playing. Students and community members are encouraged to come learn and experience Native American customs and traditions.

“We want to let Native American students know the opportunities available to them at UVSC,” said Ken Sekaquaptewa, UVSC Native American specialist. “We want them to know we offer a great variety of degrees and financial aid to help them achieve their educational goals.”

The Native American pow-wow dance competition will be November 4 at 11 a.m. in the Student Center Grande Ballroom. There will be several vendors selling native arts and crafts and traditional foods. Ray Tracy, a well known Navajo artist will be present displaying many of his own original works of art.

“We feel it’s important for our college to partner with the community on educational and cultural opportunities because there is a very strong Native American community in Utah County,” Sekaquaptewa said. “We want to provide an opportunity for them to share their culture and for the community to learn about diversity.”

The Native American Conference and Pow-wow gives Native American students and community members the opportunity to learn more about their cultural heritage as well as the educational opportunities available at UVSC.

The Native American Conference admission is free and open to the public. Entry for the Pow-wow dance competitions is $5 for adults and $3 for students and tickets to the buffalo dinner are $50.  Proceeds from the dinner will help provide student scholarships.
