Utah ’s First Lady to speak at UVSC

UVSC, the Office of the President and the Center for the Study of
Ethics will host Utah’s First lady, Mary Kaye Huntsman.
Huntsman’s speech titled “Empowering you,” will focus on
overcoming depression, achieving dreams and the power of cultivating
a positive attitude September 29 at 10 a.m. at the Ragan Theater in
the Sorensen Center. Huntsman’s goal is to help students recognize
the power within themselves to tackle any challenge they may face in
life.

“Having Mrs. Huntsman speak on our campus is an extraordinary
learning opportunity for our students,” said Elaine Engelhardt,
Professor of Philosophy and Distinguished Professor of Ethics, who
was instrumental in bringing Huntsman to campus. “She has really
helped Utah’s youth to understand that power to become and achieve
what they want.”

Huntsman, the wife of Governor Jon Huntsman Jr., has been an
influential advocate of youth in Utah, and helped create several
programs aimed at helping kids cope emotionally with various
challenges. With help from the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation, Huntsman created the “Bag of Hope,” a nationwide
program that delivers a care package of valuable information to
children newly diagnosed with diabetes. Huntsman also currently
serves as honorary chair of the Governor's Commission on Literacy,
the Utah Coalition against Sexual Assault and the Violence against
Women and Families Cabinet Council.

Huntsman has recently been involved in a new program called, “The
Jason Foundation,” aimed at reducing the youth suicide rate in
Utah. The Jason Foundation helps provide a school-based curriculum
for students, in-service presentations for teachers and community-
based presentations and seminars for parents.

“Mrs. Huntsman is a great representative for our state, and an
outstanding community servant,” said Engelhardt. “Everyone is
welcome to come and would benefit from listening to such an
inspirational lady.”

Admission is free and open to the public.
