Utah Brazilian Festival Comes to UVSC

Utah Valley State College will host the second annual Utah Brazilian
Festival September 16 from noon to 7p.m. in the McKay Events Center.
The festival, which attracted more than 6,000 people last year at
Thanksgiving Point, will feature Brazilian food and drinks, art,
stage entertainment and a traditional Brazilian martial arts
performance, the Capoeira.

“If you can’t go to Brazil, come here!” said Matilde Teixeira
Wosnjuk, a native of Brazil and event coordinator for the festival.
“We want to expose the community to Brazilian culture and all it has
to offer. It’s really for everyone.”

UVSC was chosen as a venue for this year’s festival because of the
College’s involvement in the local Brazilian community. Deborah
Ferreira, Portuguese coordinator in the UVSC Foreign Languages
Department, works collaboratively with Wosnjuk to produce a monthly
Brazilian publication, the Utah Brazilian News. Ferreira also
involves UVSC Portuguese students, who frequently write articles for
the paper. Ferreira will be recruiting students for the Brazil study
abroad program at this years’ festival and her students will join
the native folk dance.

The festival will also highlight Brazilian culture with local
performers and a live band from Miami, dancing demonstrations,
workshops and arts and crafts for all ages.

Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for children ages 4 to 12. Children 3
and under get in free. For tickets call (801) 863-SHOW (7469) or Toll-
Free 1 (888) 844-7469.
