Utah Regional Ballet to Perform Choreography Showcase

Members of the Utah Regional Ballet (URB), housed at Utah Valley State College, will present a Choreography Showcase, featuring the works of five guest choreographers October 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the UVSC Ragan Theater. This is the fourth year the company has presented the Showcase.

“It has become a favorite for our students on campus and the community because it’s such a diverse program,” said Jackie Colledge, director of the URB. “The audience will see classical, neo-classical, contemporary and Modern choreography.”

The choreographers featured in the performance include Candice Taylor, UVSC adjunct faculty and former member of Ballet West’s company. Among other notable performances, Taylor was featured with Broadway dancer Shawn Parry in the Kurt Bestor and Sam Cardon production, Keepers of the Flame, an Olympic concert event. Nichole Ortega, assistant professor at UVSC and arts representative for the Utah Academy of Science, Arts and Letters, will also be featured at the Showcase. Before coming to UVSC, Ortega worked as the modern dance educator and dance company director at Payson High School in Payson, Utah. Also contributing to the Showcase is choreographer René Daveluy from Montreal, Canada. In 2004, Daveluy became artistic director of Central West Ballet in Modesto, Calif. where he created a new version of the Nutcracker and The Red Shoes.

Originally from Beijing, China, Jiang Qi has served as guest dancer, teacher and choreographer for companies and schools around the world. In 2005, Qi was appointed artistic director of Dance China in New York City. Also featured for the evening is Britney Squires, former adjunct faculty member at UVSC and this is her third time choreographing for the Showcase. Squires retired from dance two years ago but continues to teach ballet and choreograph for several regional ballet companies as well as the Mendocino Ballet in California.

Tickets for the Choreography Showcase are $10 general admission and $8 with a valid student ID and are available at Campus Connection in the UVSC Sorensen Student Center or by calling (801) 863-8797.
