Stem Cell and Genetic Technology to be Debated at UVSC

The Utah Valley State College Center for the Study of Ethics will host Louisa Stark, director of the University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Center, to present her case study “Bioinformatics on Trial: The Genetic Engineering Debate” in a discussion on March 8 in UVSC Computer Science Building CS404 at 11:30 a.m.

“The purpose of the discussion is to foster increased awareness of the ethical issues surrounding technology and to promote ethical behavior,” said Christopher Jones, department chair of UVSC computer information technology and education.

Stark received her Ph.D in evolutionary genetics from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has worked at the U of U since 1999. Her presentation will focus on providing comprehensive information without taking sides on the issue. The goal is to supply individuals with enough information about stem cell therapy to arrive at their own educated opinion. A question and answer period will follow Stark’s presentation.

The lecture is open to the public. For more information, contact Amanda Peterson at (801) 863-6455.
