UVSC Fire Science Students Presenting at Draper City Council
Fire science students at Utah Valley State College are presenting a fire department proposal at the Draper city council meeting May 3 at 7 p.m. Students created a master plan for the city, as part of a research course. The proposal outlines the development of a fire department in Draper, Utah which they will present at the meeting.
The semester-long planning class, part of the public emergency service management degree, required students to research the many aspects of developing a fire department. Their planning included the budget, staffing models, as well as equipment needed for the department. “This project teaches students all of the intricacies to planning, standards and laws students must be aware of to meet the needs of the community,” said Jeff Maxfield, Fire Science department chair and Director of the Institute of Emergency Services and Homeland Security at Utah Valley State.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Public Emergency Services Management is designed to educate and train future public managers and administrators. The program explores and all phases of running an emergency services organization within a city, county or state agency and gives students practical experience.
