Local Writer to Read at Mormon Studies Series at UVSC
Local writer David G. Pace will read from his novel manuscript “Where Empty Armor Comes to Rest,” first place winner of the 2004 Utah Original Writing Contest, at the Mormon Studies Brown Bag series at Utah Valley State College on November 1. The event, hosted by the Religious Studies Program at UVSC begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Learning Resource Center, room 235 (Faculty Seminar Room).
Pace, a flight attendant and adjunct professor at UVSC, refers to his novel as a Mormon coming-of-age story set in Utah and New York City during the 70s and 80s.
Now that the novel has garnered an award, Pace is hoping publishers will be more likely to take a chance on it as part of the “new Mormon literature,” a term coined by poet and “Irreantum” editor, Laraine Wilkins. “My vision of the new Mormon literature” says Pace, “is one of truthful allegiance to Mormon characters and situations without using either one as a shallow front for promotional or critical commentary on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
