UVSC Provides Aviation Program to High Schools Nationwide

Utah Valley State College’s Global Aviation Department, in conjunction with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), has developed an award-winning online course designed to educate high school aged students in the field of aviation. The program, AeroScholars, is nationally recognized for its course content and innovation. The online course acts as an elective for high school students and fulfills a core requirement for graduation.

The first course, Fundamentals of Aviation Science, provides each student with an introductory examination of the aviation industry, career options, aerodynamics and flight. The second and concluding course, Advanced Aviation Science, prepares the students for the private pilot written examination by providing information regarding pilotage, airspace, communications and navigation while furthering the understanding of flight. Upon successful completion of each course, the students receive two and three college credits respectively.
“This is the first program of its kind,” said Kenny Downing, UVSC Global Aviation marketing manager. “Though there are a number of online courses available to high school students, this is the first one that addresses aviation to the degree it does.”

There are 150 students currently enrolled in the program and enrollment is projected to increase to nearly 500 by next year. The students in the program represent 100 high schools and 26 states nationwide. The AeroScholars Program is endorsed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) and the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) as well as being listed on NASA’s web site.
