New AeroScholars Program Offers Online Aviation Courses to High-School Students
The Utah Valley State College Global Aviation Program has teamed with the Experimental Aircraft Association to develop the AeroScholars Program that sponsors an online aviation program for high-school students throughout the country. Many of the involved high-school students are minorities from at-risk or under-privileged backgrounds.
“Aviation has typically been seen as a career only for the affluent or those able to enter the military,” said Dustin Berlin, assessment coordinator of UVSC Global Aviation Program. “From its inception, it was important that the AeroScholars program serve students of all backgrounds.”
The program is currently instituted in seven major cities including Milwaukee, New York City and Atlanta but is available to any high-school student in the country. AeroScholars students are eligible to receive college credit from UVSC through the program.
The AeroScholars program consists of two college-level courses over the Internet; the first teaches the basics and fundamentals of aviation science and the second provides more detailed instruction that prepares students to take the private pilot written exam and flight lessons if they choose. Web assistance and course guidance is also available to the students nine hours a day, Monday through Friday.
The UVSC Global Aviation Program has been a premier program for the College since 1999. Through this new partnership with EEA, UVSC has gained national and international attention attracting more than 1,000 students nationwide to study aviation science online through UVSC. In addition to the AeroScholars program, college students are able to earn two- or four-year college degrees online through UVSC while completing their flight training at local airports.
