UVSC Presents Annual Ballroom Dance Winter Concert
The Utah Valley State College Ballroom Dance Company will present the 15th annual Winter Concert December 1-3 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theater with a matinee performance December 3 at 2 p.m. The UVSC Ballroom Dance Company won the Open British Formation Standard Division Championship for the fourth time in May.
Director Scott Asbell has led the UVSC Ballroom Dance Company for 15 years. “The audience will be astounded and entertained by this year’s cutting edge performances,” Asbell said. The dance company’s winning medley, “Black Pearl,” will be performed and the crescendo of the concert will be the Latin medley, “Bourne Latin.”
“All five ballroom dances are featured in the ‘Bourne Latin’ medley,” Asbell said. This medley was a favorite in its category this year and lost by only one point to the Chinese team. The “Bourne Latin” medley is unlike the normal Latin approach to ballroom dance. “It is very sheik and cool,” Asbell said. This winter concert will be the very first time “Bourne Latin” will be seen in its entirety in a public setting.
The new opener by a 4-couple performance of the Broadway musical, “How I Feel,” will also be a highlight of the concert, featuring the “cha cha” in a unique formation
The Ballroom Dance winter concert will feature distinctive costumes as well as new and veteran soloists. The Lead soloists are Josh Tycksen, Salt Lake City; Mandi McKinley, Provo; Celeste Brewer, Sandy; Jenna Richards, Salt Lake City; Isaac Madsen, Orem; Rachel Richardson, Sandy and Josh Murillo, Provo.
Proceeds from the concert will help the company defend its Open British Championship title in Blackpool, England next season.
