UVSC Hosts Business Plan Competition

The Utah Valley State College School of Business is now accepting student entries for the 2006 E-Squared business plan competition. A business plan includes ideas for a feasible business venture, descriptions of the product or service offered, a clear mission and strategies for reaching business objectives. More than $6,000 in cash and other prizes will be awarded to the finalists. Students can submit individual or team executive summaries to the UVSC Woodbury Business Building, room 230. Deadline is December 5.

For the first stage of the UVSC E-Squared business plan completion, ten executive summary entries will be announced as semi-finalists by December 12. Those participants will receive a $100 prize. Executive summaries should be 4-7 pages in length detailing management, financial projections and competitive advantage.

UVSC senior, Slade Simkins, a business major of Orem, Utah, placed third in last year’s UVSC business plan competition. “I won $1,500 and was awarded a trophy,” Simkins said. Simkins now assists other students to prepare their business plans through workshops and other resources. “Summaries will be judged on feasibility, accuracy and professional style,” Simkins said.

At the second phase of the competition, mentors from UVSC and the business community will be assigned to semi-finalist students to help them prepare a complete business plan to be submitted on February 10, 2006. Students will have the opportunity to present their business plans before a panel of judges who will select the finalists. A reception banquet will be held in honor of the finalists where trophies and prizes will be awarded.

The winner of the 2006 E-Squared competition will be automatically entered in the Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge (UEC). Last year, there were 40 entries in UVSC’s business plan competition and five finalists were selected. The UVSC winner, Mike Stebinger ’04, placed in the top three of the UEC competition. Stebinger developed Cartoon Solutions, a flash animation program that creates cartoon images.

The 2006 E-Squared business plan competition is sponsored by UVSC School of Business in association with the Utah Small Business Association.

Students must deliver their executive summaries to WB 230, as well as e-mail an electronic copy to e-squared@uvsc.edu no later than December 5.
