UVSC’s College Times Receives National Honor
Utah Valley State College’s student-run newspaper, The College Times, earned Honorable Mention honors for Best of Show at the 22nd Annual National College Publications Workshops in Washington D.C. The conference is sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press to provide college newspaper staffs the opportunity to hone their skills and gain new ideas.
UVSC was one of approximately 45 schools from around the country competing for the honors that are awarded to five schools based on the design and layout of the paper.
“It’s the first year we’ve received an award for being a four-year college,” said Ryan Meeks, College Times editor. “Most of the papers we go up against are weeklies like us. It brings a lot more credibility for us to possibly win bigger and better awards. It will also help us recruit new people to our staff.”
Staff members from the College Times have attended the conference in the past and won awards when UVSC was a two-year college. Meeks said the same five or six schools generally win, making the accomplishment a big step for the paper and its staff.
The Associated Collegiate Press, established in 1921, is an organization designed to help college journalists by organizing workshops and conferences, providing resources and giving them access to professional media.
