Japanese Musical Drama at UVSC
Utah Valley State College will host a Noh Japanese drama on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. This performance is sponsored by the Butler of Institute for International Understanding with support from the Leslie DeeAnn Asian Center, a Neways International affiliate. Due to the classical nature of the play, a mature and appreciative audience is recommended.
Noh is a style of Japanese performance that blends dancing, chanting, music and masks. Noh, which means ability or skill in Japanese, is the oldest existing form of theater today and originated during the 14th century. Traditionally, performances depict aspects of the ancient Japanese religion Shinto and the reign of the emperors.
“Some of the most prominent actors from Tokyo will be performing in this production, as well as putting on a workshop and lecture,” said Masakazu Watabe, professor of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University.
Tickets are free and available beginning June 20 at Campus Connection, (801) 863-8797.
Those interested in a hands-on demonstration workshop, please contact Junko Watabe in the UVSC International Office at (801) 863-8089, the Asian Near Eastern Language Department at BYU at (801) 422-3396 or email watabeju@uvsc.edu.
