Woodbury Art Museum Presents “Pop Art”

Utah Valley State College’s Woodbury Art Museum presents the “Pop Art” exhibition featuring portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol as well as pieces from well-known artists like Roy Lichenstein, Robert Indiana, Peter Max, Alex Katz, Robert Rauschenburg and others. Emerging in the late 1950s, Pop Art parallels real life and mimics popular culture, consumerism, materialism, individualism and prominent figures in society with minimal abstraction. The exhibition opens January 6 to February 4, Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. The Woodbury Art Museum is located in the University Mall (between Nordstrom and The Gap), 575 East University Parkway, Orem, Utah.

“Pop art is critical, fanciful, hallucinogenic and tells us who we really are,” said Marcus Vincent, UVSC director of the Woodbury Art Museum. “It transcends into all different forms and uses comic to produce traditional art from daily life.”

Authentic copies of Warhol’s “Marilyn” imitate Monroe’s various moods through color, shadows and light reflections. Indiana’s “Halo Love” is a colorful popular block lettering of the word love and is used universally. Max’s “Memory Bliss” takes the traveler through a live maze of facial expressions and movements. Other pieces like Warhol’s “Onion Soup,” a painting of a labeled can of Campbell’s onion soup is almost as realistic as an actual photograph.

Local grade and high schools as well as college classes are invited to tour the exhibition. Students and professionals seeking research material on art forms will also find the “Pop Art” display to be of interest. Paul Gessell, senior at UVSC from Stackton, Calif., and an assistant at the museum said, “Pop art is a pretty unique way of seeing things. It’s a way for students to expand their culture.”

The exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information or to schedule a group tour contact Marcus Vincent at (801) 426-6199 or visit www.uvsc.edu/gallery.
