UVSC Showcases Local Achievement in Art
Each year the Sorenson Student Center at UVSC honors a member of the community with the Ragan Theater Showcase Merit Award for significant contribution to the arts. This year’s honors go to Jerry Elison, 75, a retired school teacher who continues to head up the theatre department at Orem High School. As part of the award, Elison chose to showcase one of his favorite Broadway musicals, “Little Mary Sunshine,” January 10-14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ragan Theater. The play is set in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, around the early 20th century. “It is a very clever and delightful musical spoof of the old fashion operettas,” Elison said.
Elison has directed more than one hundred productions over his 50-year career in education and community theatre. He has directed plays at many theatres in the valley and most recently at the Hale Center Theater he directed, “A Christmas Carol.”
“We are always looking for someone who has done something to enhance the community through the arts,” said Joel Herd, assistant director of UVSC’s Sorenson Student Center. “The Showcase Merit Award is a simple way for the community, former students and friends to support and honor Jerry.”
Tickets for “Little Mary Sunshine” are $6 each at the door or from Campus Connection at (801) 863-8797. For more information contact Joel Herd at (801) 863-7493.
