Four-Year Dance Degrees at UVSC

Beginning Fall Semester ’05, Utah Valley State College will offer three four-year dance degrees including a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts with emphases in Ballet/Modern dance, a Bachelor’s of Science in Movement Studies with an emphasis in Ballroom dance and a Bachelor’s of Science in Dance Education with secondary licensure.

With the associate in dance degree already in place, implementing the expanded four-year programs will allow students studying dance to continue their learning and instruction at UVSC.

“The students reach a threshold at the end of their second year when they’ve developed a fundamental skill base,” said Associate Dean of Academics and Dance faculty member, Kathie Debenham. “Then, they are ready to fly.”
After completing 30 credit hours of prerequisites, which build a base of academic performance as well as technique, students are able to audition for a dance major.

“The skills you develop in dance are broad-based skills, way beyond how high you can kick your leg,” Debenham stated. “They are the kinds of critical-thinking skills that are very useful in volunteer work, education and even out into the business sector.”
