UVSC Enrollment Numbers Announced

The final numbers are in, and Utah Valley State College officially announced its fall semester enrollment counts yesterday. The College continues to grow with a headcount of 24,488 students taking classes, compared to last year’s 24,149 students. In 1998 headcount was calculated to be 18,174 and since that time UVSC has seen a continual rise in the number of students attending the College.

This year’s full-time equivalent (FTE) has actually seen a slight drop in number from 16,339 last year to 16,080. College administrators feel the decrease is due to several factors including the low local unemployment rates, the number of high school graduates in Utah reaching a temporary plateau and the fact that nearly all the retraining of former Geneva Steel employees is complete.
There are other factors to consider as well. UVSC has just transferred to a new statewide registration system, causing delays and various student frustrations. Also, the College now requires the ACT to be taken and a requirement for admission this year.

In general, the campus community is satisfied with the numbers, and is now focused on the rest of the academic year. “We anticipated a slight drop in on-campus enrollment due to the economy, requiring the ACT and the current demographics of Utah’s high school graduates,” said Michelle Lundell, associate vice president for student services. “We are concentrating our efforts on retaining our current students, targeted recruitment and personally helping students along their academic path.”
