Orson Scott Card to Present Writing Workshops at UVSC
Award-winning author Orson Scott Card will present two writing workshops at Utah Valley State College. Hosted by UVSC Conferences and Workshops, the first workshop, "Uncle Orson's Writing Class," is June 24-25 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The second workshop, "Literary Boot Camp," is June 27-29 at 9 a.m.
"We are excited to host Orson Scott Card at UVSC," said Luella Jones, coordinator for UVSC Conferences and Workshops. "He is such a talented author and it is a great opportunity to have him here sharing his skills with our writing community."
"Uncle Orson's Writing Class" will focus on developing the talents of both novice and experienced writers through two days of discussions, lectures and idea sessions. Registration is $175 per person and does not include housing or meals. "Literary Boot Camp" is only open to 15 writers of college age and older who are interested in writing as a profession.
Following the writing class participants will continue with four days of reading and critiquing stories developed during "Uncle Orson's Writing Class." Those wishing to attend "Literary Boot Camp" must first register for "Uncle Orson's Writing Class" and submit only the first page of a short story. Registration is $725 and includes the cost of "Uncle Orson's Writing Class," but does not include housing or meals. Because there will be a Boot Camp held the summer of 2006 in Virginia, a slight preference will be given to those applicants living west of Mississippi.
Orson Scott Card is the author of the novels "Ender's Game," "Ender's Shadow" and "Speaker for the Dead." His novels are widely read by adults and young readers and are increasingly used in schools. In addition to writing, Card is a professor of writing and literature at Southern Virginia University. This will be his second workshop at UVSC.
