UVSC Announces New Honors Director
Utah Valley State College welcomes Joy C. Ross, Ph.D., as the new director of the Honors program. UVSC’s Honors program began more than 10 years ago under the direction of JaNae Brown Haas, professor of history and political science at UVSC. However, to accommodate growing demand, UVSC has expanded and enhanced the Honors program, focusing on academic excellence and targeting students seeking an intellectual challenge. Honors courses stress a rigorous curriculum as well as an active extracurricular schedule including cultural events, campus clubs and teams, service and leadership.
Ross comes to UVSC with solid experience and a varied background in scholarship, teaching and learning and new program development. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from Penn State University; a master’s in creative writing from Hollins University (Roanoke, Va.) and a second master’s in creative writing from the University of Arizona (Tucson). Before joining UVSC’s Honors program, Ross was an assistant professor of English and journalism at Tusculum College in Greenville, Tenn. and Senior Lecturer in the Advanced Writing Program at the University of Southern California.
“Joy brings a unique combination of professional experience and skills to UVSC. She is highly creative and very engaging,” said Lisa Lambert, assistant dean in the School of General Academics at UVSC. “Students in the program will find Dr. Ross to be very approachable and very student focused.”
UVSC’s goal is to launch the expanded and enhanced program Fall 2006. UVSC will recruit qualified students from the state of Utah and the intermountain west. For more information contact Lisa Lambert at (801)-863-8741, or visit www.uvsc.edu/honors.
