UVSC Professors to Share Poetry

Two Utah Valley State College English professors will share their talents at a poetry reading and book signing Thursday, November 17 at 1 p.m. in room 243 of the Learning Resource Center (Faculty Seminar room).

Professors Laura Hamblin and Rob Carney will read several of their own poems and be available to sign their books. Hamblin’s book is titled “The Eyes of a Flounder” and is her first. Carney, who has published several books, will read from his latest, “This is One Sexy Planet.” The books will be available for purchase at the event.

An earlier version of Hamblin’s book won first place in poetry at the Utah Arts Council's Utah Original Writers Competition in 2003. Carney was a Utah Arts Council Individual Artist Grant Recipient for Poetry in 2003 and 2004 and has read his poetry by invitation at festivals and colleges from Utah and across the country.

“Both Laura and Rob have been very productive and creative members of the department for many years,” said Rick McDonald, assistant chair of the English department. “Each has had significant success in publishing and the English & Literature Department is proud to have such accomplished writers representing it to students and the greater community."

Not only are Hamblin and Carney accomplished writers, they have both been named UVSC Teacher of the Year for the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.

For more information on the reading, contact Rick McDonald at (801) 863-8365.
