UVSC Conducts International Exchange Lecture

The Utah Valley State College Technology Enhanced Teaching Center in conjunction with James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns, Australia conducted the College’s first international exchange lecture, Wednesday November 2.

Dr. Jamie Seymour from JCU, a professor of biology, was the speaker and his lecture was titled, “Box Jellyfish: The most venomous marine creatures known.” Dr. Seymour is widely recognized as the leading researcher in the world on the ecology of jellyfish. Approximately 10 students and five faulty members of all disciplines from UVSC attended while 20 people at JCU attended. Following the lecture, there was a question and answer session between the two parties.

Carlos Alarco, a technology training assistant with the Technology Enhanced Teaching Center, who helped organize the event, said the video and audio stream came across clearly. Alarco, from Australia, approached JCU with the idea in 2003. After two years of experimenting and planning, the lecture was held. The two colleges are planning another lecture next semester that will originate from UVSC.

“The technology is available and we should take advantage of it,” Alarco said. “We can bring the world closer together via the use of technology. This can only broaden our views towards the people that we share this planet with and make it a better place.”
