UVSC to Help With Hurricane Victims
The Utah Valley State College Center for Service and Learning and the Child Care Resource and Referral Center are working to help Hurricane Katrina victims recover and adjust to life in Utah. It is estimated that 1,000 hurricane evacuees will be living at the Army National Guard’s Camp Williams in Lehi, Utah or at a homeless shelter in Midvale, Utah for up to four months.
Julia Mohr, the coordinator of the College’s Child Care Resource and Referral center is recruiting people to help with child care needs at Camp Williams. She can be contacted at (801) 863-8557. Several students have already volunteered and are joining the Child Care Resource staff at the camp on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will also help evacuees find child care as they acquire jobs in the area.
The Center for Service and Learning, located in the Student Center, room 101, is collecting donations of shelving for toys, baby supplies, children’s books, dramatic play toys, wooden blocks, school supplies and clothing. Donations can also be placed in drop boxes around campus.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has asked those interested in vhelping do so through monetary donations. Organizations that are accepting money and have been approved by FEMA include: the American Red Cross, Operation Blessing, America’s Second Harvest, Corporation for National and Community Service Disaster Relief Fund and the Salvation Army.
The Center for Service and Learning will continue to inform the College as to what can be done as the needs of the victims continue to be assessed.
