UVSC Professor Receives Imperial Award
Utah Valley State College associate professor Dale Olson has been named the recipient of the 2005 Imperial Award for scoring the highest in the nation on the Commercial Refrigeration Specialist Examination. The award is presented by the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES), an organization founded in 1933 that provides educational training to service professionals of all experience levels engaged in heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration.
Olson graduated from UVSC’s Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology program in 1982. After working in the industry for several years, he returned to teach in 1990.
“He has been a dedicated, hardworking faculty member,” said Steve Fordham, the Refrigeration Technology department chair. “He cares about his students and their being successful in the highly technical field of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology.”
The Commercial Refrigeration Specialist Examination is one of seven exams offered by the RSES that allow members to become Certificate Member Specialists. Members of RSES must first become Certified Members (CM) by passing an exam before becoming a Certified Member Specialist (CMS). The current pass rate to achieve CM status is 30 percent and 20 percent for CMS.
This is the second certification exam on which Olson has earned the top score. In 2000 he earned the Imperial Award by scoring the highest on the Domestic Specialist Exam. In 2004 he passed the Electrical Specialist Exam along with the Commercial Refrigeration Specialist Exam. His goal is to pass all seven exams. His specialty background is in the area of ultra - low temperature, cascade medical test chambers and large tonnage chillers.
“To receive this award is a great honor,” Olson said. “I have been singled out from among some of the best technicians and educators in North America.”
