Father of Mormon Cinema to Speak at UVSC

Richard Dutcher, director of the film “God’s Army 2: States of Grace,” will be speaking at Utah Valley State College November 14 at 11 a.m. in the Ragan Theater.

Helping bring Dutcher to Campus is Boyd Peterson, a lecturer in the English Department, who is teaching a Mormon Literature class this semester.

“I have been trying to bring in some of the authors and major influences in Mormon literature to speak to my class,” Peterson said. “It was serendipitous that Dutcher's film came out just prior to our class discussion on Mormon film and I figured there might be more interest in hearing Dutcher speak to our larger campus community.”

Dutcher also directed “God’s Army” and “Brigham City” and is credited with fathering the genre of “Mormon cinema.”

“I think, especially after seeing his newest film, a lot of UVSC students will have questions about his film-making vision and about his views on the arts within Mormon culture,” Peterson said. “This is a chance for UVSC students to hear from a major force in contemporary cinema.”

“God’s Army 2: States of Grace” is currently in limited release showing in Idaho and Utah.
