UVSC to Screen “Proposition 1984”
As part of the forum for faculty research, the Utah Valley State College Integrated Studies department will screen English Assistant Professor Dr.Bonnie Kyburz’s film “Proposition 1984.” The screening will be Tuesday, October 11 from 2:30-3:45 p.m. in the Liberal Arts building room 101.
“Proposition 1984” documents the work of a group of committed academics/activists who urged teachers everywhere to teach George Orwell’s novel “1984” in the fall of 2004. In Orwell’s famous novel, he exposed the ways in which powerful bodies use lies, manipulative language games and other persuasive means of enacting totalizing forms of social control.
“’Proposition 1984’” is the story of the academics/activist group and their encouragement of critical awareness of Orwell’s arguments and questions about language and politics. Kyburz will introduce the film and have a question & answer session following the screening.
“Proposition 1984 will hopefully interest students in reading Orwell’s novel and learn of language that is used manipulatively in today’s world,” Kybruz said.
