Steve Young to Address Graduates at Commencement

Steve Young, the highest-rated quarterback in National Football League (NFL) history, will return to the valley of his college glory years to address graduating students at the Utah Valley State College commencement ceremony April 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the UVSC McKay Events Center.

UVSC will recognize Steve Young, as well as Boyd and Jill Smith, the founders of the UVSC Golden Gate Annual Scholarship, with honorary doctorate degrees at commencement.

“We’re pleased to honor and recognize Steve Young and the Smiths for their accomplishments educationally, professionally and civilly,” said UVSC President William A. Sederburg. “Steve Young’s legacy as a student athlete is great—amidst his professional success, he continued on to accomplish his educational goals. Additionally, Boyd and Jill Smith have been extremely influential in supporting the mission of UVSC with their generous donations.”

Young’s claim to fame includes Super Bowl XXIX Most Valuable Player and the NFL’s MVP in 1992 and 1994. He is the only quarterback to have won four consecutive passing titles, post four consecutive seasons with a quarterback rating above 100 and post six consecutive 300-yard plus passing games. Young was also selected to participate in the Pro Bowl for seven consecutive years.

In addition to his football triumphs, Young received a Juris Doctor from Brigham Young University, founded and chairs the Forever Young Foundation and the Sport, Education and Values Foundation. Young is one of the broadcast hosts for the Children’s Miracle Network and a board member of the American Indian Services.

Boyd and Jill Smith fund the Golden Gate Annual Scholarship sending California residents primarily of Hispanic and Pacific Island descent to UVSC, with tuition, fees and living expenses paid. They have also made several contributions to the College, which have helped brand and market UVSC’s quality education.
