Scientists from New York are Instructing High School Teachers at UVSC
Utah Valley State College is hosting a workshop for high school teachers from around the nation today through Wednesday on plant molecular genetics and genomics. The conference, funded by the National Science Foundation, is presented by scientists from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory research and educational institute in New York.
UVSC Biology Professor Olga Kopp helped organize the event. She said the conference is in high demand, but not many teachers have the opportunity to attend.
“This is taught by prestigious scientists and there are very few of these courses available outside of New York,” said Kopp. “This is very important because of the impact the course has on teachers and students.”
Teachers from Utah as well as several other states are on campus for the three-day conference. Workshops focus on modern plant research and DNA isolation. Participants will also learn how to use Internet-based resources to help teach students genetics and genomics.
