UVSC Transforms Lives, One Student at a Time

OREM, Utah–Good luck does not shine equally on everyone.

Fortunately for disadvantaged students and families in crisis, Utah Valley State College’s Turning Point and Women’s Resource Center are able to assist students with donations from the Sunshine Lady Foundation.

As of November, 2005, the Sunshine Lady Foundation contributed over half a million dollars to UVSC students who need a “hand up” to become independent.

These donations go directly to the students to provide assistance for students who need scholarships, book fees, loans and personal consultations. The Women’s Resource Center facilitates the foundation in getting assistance to qualifying students.

The Sunshine Lady Foundation of Wilmington, North Carolina is a private family foundation started by Doris Buffett. The Foundation invests in organizations and programs dedicated to providing disadvantaged people opportunities for educational advancement. The Sunshine Lady Foundation funds scholarships, fellowships and grants to develop self-sufficiency, leadership, and good citizenship.

Donations from the Sunshine Lady Foundation have enabled UVSC’s Women’s Resource Center and Turning Point to provide life-transforming educational skills. “I am delighted to be part of this institution,” said Peggy Pasin, Program Coordinator for UVSC’s Women’s Resource Center.

"I am grateful for UVSC’s commitment to the ideal of community outreach and their provision of resources for non-traditional and at-risk students,” Pasin said. “The cumulative total from the Sunshine Lady Foundation has now reached $571,323.00," Pasin reports. This means the Sunshine Lady Foundation merits UVSC Foundation Gold Circle status for gifts over $250,000.

The impact on the lives of these recipients is immeasurable, according Pasin. “Many of the early recipients have completed their studies, secured careers, and are doing very well. Their successes are possible, not only because the Sunshine Lady Foundation believed in them and invested in them, but also because UVSC invested in programs to give them the support essential to completing their studies,” Pasin said.

The Women’s Resource Center at UVSC provides students with educational consulting, financial assistance, education/child care scholarships, academic support, tutoring referrals, textbook fund loans, career review planning, resume and interviewing skill development, counseling and group therapy and community service information.

UVSC is transforming lives, one student at a time.
