UVSC Professors Present to Geological Society of America
Three UVSC professors from the Department of Earth Science have been invited to present their research at the 117th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, October 16-19. Dr. Daniel Horns, department chair and assistant professor of earth science has teamed with fellow assistant professors Dr. William Dinklage and Dr. Michael Bunds in assessing the use of research to motivate students at an open-enrollment college.
Horns, Dinklage and Bunds assessed the lack of confidence students have at an open-enrollment college and conducted research designed for participation by sophomore and junior-level students which was supervised by senior-level students and faculty.
Horns, Dinklage and Bunds also surveyed six undergraduate students during the summer of 2005 and observed that the student’s involvement with earth science research has affected their self confidence, their interest in the earth sciences; their feeling that earth science is relevant to them and their motivation to complete their degrees.
“This study investigates how being involved in geologic research has affected students’ self confidence and attitude about college” said Horns. “We want the students to develop the skills and knowledge needed to pursue careers.”
