UVSC Hosts Math Awareness Week

Utah Valley State College will sponsor a campus-wide math awareness week September 12-16 in order to promote and encourage the subject of mathematics. The theme of the week will be “Mathematics is Everywhere” and the week’s events, including keynote speakers, lectures and hands-on activities, will center on math related topics.

As part of the week’s events there will be a different math movie featured each day including popular films like “Stand and Deliver” and “The Numbers Game,” among others. There will also be various keynote speakers including Jaime Escalante, the actual teacher depicted in the movie “Stand and Deliver,” Math Guy Keith Devlin from National Public Radio (NPR) and Dr. James Keener of the math department at University of Utah. UVSC Earth Science Assistant Professor Michael Bunds will also address participants about math behind scaling and predicting earthquakes.

“Math is more than just algebra,” said Kathy Van Wagoner, UVSC Math Lab manager. “We want to highlight some interesting and exciting aspects of mathematics.”
